Horror films often deal with the viewer’s nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, aliens, vampires, monsters, zombies, cannibals, and serial killers.

El Terror és un gènere del cinema que cerca provocar una reacció emocional negativa en els espectadors despertant en ells les seves pors més primàries. Sovint empren escenes que sobresalten a l’espectador, fent ús de temes macabres i sobrenaturals. AIxò fa que sovint es solapin amb els gèneres de fantasia, sobrenatural i suspense.
Les pel·lícules de Terror sovint tractan dels malsons dels espectadors, de les seves pors ocultes, i del terror a allò desconegut. Els arguments d’aquest gènere de terror tracten de l’aparició d’una força d’origen sobrenatural o diabòlic dins del món ordinari. Els elements predominants inclouen fantasmes, aliens, vampirs, monstres, zombis, caníbals, assassins en sèrie, etc.
